She's Two

Oh, the terrible twos have certainly begun.... Some moments are just way to sweet and endearing, while others make me want to buy ear plugs.

Dressing:
Mia is picky. She doesn't like the act of dressing in the morning or changing into pajamas in the evening. I try to let her choose between two options. She usually goes for the girly girl option i.e. floral patterns, or ribbons, shiny decorations on the clothing, etc... But sometimes, she just doesn't want to change her clothes. She would rather be naked. Thus, sometimes she wears her PJ's for a while. Other times, she'll wear a dress to bed. Sometimes, she's just not happy as I change her anyways. Now, God forbid should I dress Cate in a shirt or outfit that Mia wants. Mia will tug and trump on Cate. Poor Cate. Thus, here I am, changing clothes again. Our sweet Cate doesn't usually mind at all though.

Eating:
Mia is picky. Did I mention that already? She's going through this phase whereby she doesn't want different types of food touching each other. No raisins "in" her cereal, it has to be in a separate bowl. She'll take the veggies out of her noodles, and put them on Cate's plate. Cate will sometime this. Mia has about 20 things she'll eat (at least we have a few items from every food group). She loves proteins and carbs. She loves spinach, zuchinni, and sweet potatoes. She rarely will eat fruit, but loves strawberry/banana smoothies. Cate eats just about everything.

Shoes:
Each of the girls have their own set of shoes. They know which ones are theirs. Mia will NOT go outside without her shoes. She will not go in outdoor wading pools with her shoes though. Cate of course, doesn't mind shoes in the wading pool, but definitely prefers shoes outdoors too though.

Whining:
Cate is going through some whining phase right now. They say that toddlers whine when they haven't developed maturity in language. I think that's partly the reason why we have an increase in whining. But sometimes, it drives me nuts, and I just plug my ears. Seriously! They say the best option here is to ignore it or encourage them to "use their words". We're trying both. Now Mia has observed that the whining is getting some sort of reaction from me though and she's curious why Cate is rolling around on the floor whining. So, Mia will join in. Oh... they dynamics of twins.

Playing:
This is the really cute part though. They will find anything entertaining and giggle hysterically with one another. Towels on their heads, playing on each side of a jacket hanging off a chair, crashing on the slide with one another, running around the house with their baby strollers, you name it.

Sharing:
An amazingly sweet thing happened this morning. Mia had a little bowl of fish cheese crackers. I asked her to give one to Cate. She did. She put one on the chair in front of Cate. Cate ate it and asked for more verbally and via sign language. Mia kept giving her one after the other. I continued to reinforce to Mia how nice she was being. Cate then got a little bowl of raisins. Without Mia even asking for it, Cate found Mia's now empty bowl where her fish crackers use to be. Took several raisins from her bowl into Mia's bowl, and proceeds to follow Mia to hand it to her. So sweet. It just melts my heart.....

A Lot Happens In One Year (My first post July 2007)

A Lot Happens In One Year
A lot really happens in one year. I decided to include an album on this site, with some of my favorite first year pictures of my wonderful sweet twin daughters.

Almost a year ago, we brought Mia home from the hospital (July 26). Chris and I were so nervous. Each night, every little grumble or sound she made, we were convinced something was wrong. Until we would look into her bassinet and find her perfectly happy and content. She was an easy baby. Cate was still in the SICU (Special Infant Care Unit) at Swedish. She was still having some Brady episodes (breathing stops/heart rate drops) and not eating consistently. The doctors reassured us that she would be fine by the time we brought her home. Cate ended up coming home a couple weeks later on August 9th. Today, they're a little over 13 months old. We bought this little scooter / walker toy. Cate sat in it, while Mia pushed her forward. It was the cutest thing ever. Chris and I were beaming with pride. I can't believe they're going to be walking soon.

I also went back to work last year, after my 7 months of leave. I started a new job in January, but tomorrow, I'm turning in my resignation. Honestly, I don't know how I ever could have thought that I could do it all. It's just too hard. My days are so full and my weekends are wonderful spending time with my husband and the girls, but exhausting. There is very little down time. And something had to give. Before I made the decision to leave, I think I was the one who was paying the price. Now, I've decided that it's my job that needs to. Thus, I'm leaving Microsoft. Huge decision for us, after being there for 8 years. I've decided to go into consulting/contract work. I'm hoping it will give me more flexibility and work life balance. I'm hoping that this change will be better on my overall constitution. The last 6 months have been very hard. Let's just hope some consulting company decides to employ me. It's interesting how one can associate so much of their identify with what they do and where they work. Microsoft, was certainly part of my identify for a very long time. Thus, this decision really is quite significant for me. I'm a mother now and that is the most important role I can ever play.
